Autism, The Musical, Shines
Autism the Musical is finally hitting the television screens! HBO premiered the riveting musical March 25th and the DVD is available now for pre-order.
But what is the big deal about this film? Well, it’s the first of it’s kind. It follows five Los Angeles children with autism over the course of six months and captures their struggles and triumphs.
Autism Speaks says they “defy” their diagnosis as they create, prepare, and then perform a live musical on stage.
Director Tricia Pegan, who has an autistic child herself, captures thei children’s creative side and helps create a comfort zone for them on stage.
According to April Peveteaux, the film, despite its dark subject is still a feel-good film. The film follows The Miracle Project, a theater program for children with autism in Los Angeles.
Elaine Hall, the creator of The Miracle Project has an adopted son from Russia who has autism, thus my huge interest in this film. We have always wondered if AJ does in fact have organic autism because of the way he reacts to traditional autism treatments, his biomedical make-up, and his PDD scores. But, because he is from Russia and because of the high incidence of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, no one will diagnose him with autism.
The musical, as Boston Globe calls it, is regular and special all at the same time. It delivers simple photography and doesn’t conceal the tough days that children with autism have, especially when undertaking a giant production like a musical.
