Do These Toys Speak for Autism?

Wednesday, April 23rd, 2008

ebeanstalk-pegs.gifOnce again, Toys R’ Us has teamed up with Autism Speaks to help Autism Awareness, by creating a list of products that are well suited for children on the autism spectrum. Back in September, Maria Shriver helped promote Toys R Us’s line of Differently Abled toys for kids of all abilities. (more…)

Take Me Out to the Ball Game

Thursday, February 14th, 2008

AJ has never been one to pick up a ball for the fun of it…he usually picks up one in anger or disgust and then throws it. But man, does he have an arm. A strong left one and an even stronger right one.

According to eBeanStalk’s Physical Therapist, Deanie Barth, “A child does not simply wake up one day with the ability to accurately catch and throw and kick a ball, it is a learning process just like any other required skill.”

It is About “Time”

Wednesday, December 5th, 2007

Time Magazine reported last week that SPD, or Sensory Processing Disorder is real.

Well, golly gee whiz. I know it exists and so do thousands of other parents. (However, apparently, some think our kids are aliens…) Insurance companies refuse to recognize it because they don’t want to pay for it and the DSM V still has yet to recognize it as a neurological issue.

But how long does it take for the general public to realize that kids are dealing with this issue? Obviously 25 years…

The Top Ten Sensory Integration Holiday Gifts

Wednesday, November 21st, 2007

With all the talk over lead free toys and non-toxic toys (I should know…I write a lot of it) I know that there is a lot of information that we are missing. How do we get sensory products that are safe?

Well, I do know that a few of them are. Here are my Top Five for children over Three.theo.jpg

Toys for the Differently - Abled Kids Not at Toys R Us

Wednesday, November 7th, 2007

Not long ago I wrote about the new Toys R Us launch for the Differntly-Abled Kids and recently Julie over at Play Library wrote about it. Obviously, I am not a big fan. Why?

A Successful Halloween

Wednesday, October 17th, 2007

My son LOVES Halloween. He loves everything about Halloween…the pumpkins, the decorations, the hayrides, the farms (oh, the farms!), the costumes, the candy that he can’t eat, the lights…everything.

He has been talking about Halloween since September when he saw the first pumpkin in the store. I’m certainly not looking forward to the Christmas decorations (which I know he has already seen).

Shriver Joins Toys R Us Differently-Abled Kids

Wednesday, September 12th, 2007

The First Lady of California has teamed up with Toys” R ” Us in their Debut of Differently-Abled Kids. Available online and in stores, the “Guide for Differently Abled Kids is a complimentary toy-selection guide for parents and friends of children with disabilities”.

“I am so thrilled to join Toys “R” Us in its efforts to bring joy and laughter to children of all abilities through the power of play,” said Maria Shriver, who, in addition to being the First Lady of California, is the mother of four children. “The toys featured throughout the Guide provide a wonderful way to inspire children with special needs, encouraging them to have fun while learning everyday skills.”

The site not only includes toys recommendations but also National Lekotek Center’s “Top Ten Tips for Buying Toys”. Consumers can also download the guide so they can view it without being on the internet…a huge plus for those of us with internet issues. Additionally, there will be 3 million copies available in stores throughout the country.

Toys “R” Us will also be partnering up with special needs organizations like Autism Speaks, Children and Adults with Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, Muscular Dystrophy Association, National Association of Special Education Teachers (NASET) and National Down Syndrome Society (NDSS).

Currently, Toy “R” Us is the world’s leading specialty toy retailer. This will obviously catapult them into the special needs arena as well.

However, in order to seriously enter the special needs toy world they need to look at specialty toys and products. Tinker Toys and Dora are not going to cut it.

I looked at the toys they are showcasing as “Special Needs”…its the same stuff they have on their regular site and even some of the toys don’t fit their categories. ie: fine motor…a Little People School Bus? Lets see some lacing beads and cards, pegs and pegboards, gears building sets, squeeze balls.

In fact, just head to Therapy Shoppe for those things.

Christmas in July

Sunday, July 8th, 2007

Cross-posted at My Two Boys

Special thanks to Working in Pjs for reminding me that it is certainly Christmas in July! In her post she writes about getting you all ready for holiday shopping.

Alice Meadows at Associated Content, The People’s Media Company, talks extensively about hot to start shopping now to save money and be stress free when the holidays come around.

The Savvy Shopper writes about Christmas in July and the six tips to better shopping.

MomandMurray’s Personal Finance Blog writes about the finances of shopping early.

Even Problogger mentions holiday shopping this past week in his article Seasonal Traffic and How to Capture it for Your Blog.

But, I’m not here to get more traffic or save you money, although I would hope that I can do the latter. I’m here to give you advice on products to purchase. I know that I, as well as my mother (perhaps I learned it from her) start Christmas shopping in July. When I see things I like I get them and store them away. I actually bought presents in February this year and already have Jenn and Grandma Pickel done.

But, that said, my job here is to give you all incredible sensory products for every age.

So, I will be doing a series of posts on age, gender, and sensory processing dysfunction.

True to my word, I am posting Christmas gifts…the best of the best for 2007 for Sensory kids. eBeanStalk.com is one of my absolute favorite children’s stories and they have fantastic child development toys and educational products. This post is all about their sensory products for kids ages newborn to one.

Why do I like them so much?
Our team of child specialists brings a comprehensive approach to child development. Using their collective experiences - Shari, Andy, Deanie, Barbara, and Gopi - ensure each and every facet of child development is covered. They select the toys, create Graduated Play ideas for each toy, author the eBeanstalk instruction cards, answer great FAQ’s, and much, much more.

Happy Christmas Shopping!
