Friday Freebies - Thanksgiving
Is it Thanksgiving already? What do you have in store for your kids? I don’t have anything yet for mine…except for the annual Turkey Trot wherein we go trotting to get the “Tigger Bounces” out.

That all started back in 1985ish when Mr. So in So invited what is now known as the “Turkey Trot Group” over to his house on Thanksgiving morning for the first annual Trot. At 8 in the morning 15 families filed into their home and checked in. Can you imagine 15 families, each with 2-3 children?
We have spent the last 20 Thanksgivings together “trotting” through parks, playgrounds, backyards, and sidewalks. We have enjoyed the balmy weather, bared the bitter winds and snows, and we have sludged through wet snow and jumped through puddles. Our parents dealt with their fair share of toddler tantrums when we were young and now are dealing with our toddler’s fits and middle school woes.
We used to trot at our parent’s homes and now our parents expect to trot at ours. And what is interesting is that almost all of us still live in the area…except for one in India and one in Western Illinois.
And, how is this a freebie, you ask? Free food, free fun, free exercise before the Turkey…its a requirement in our home. Every family brings a breakfast item to the trot, we trot, we eat, we socialize. And, the kids go home tired.
But the very best thing is that we see people we only see at wedding showers and weddings, at baby showers and Christenings, at random birthday parties and the occasional grocery outing. Sure, we have our very best friends out of the bunch that we see quite often (like AJ’s teacher friend who stops by his classroom once a week to check up on him and the couple who still bring their grandchildren to the park down the street).
But all in all…its like going home for five hours and being welcomed no matter where you were the last year of your life. No matter what you do you will always be a trotter and you will always be welcomed (especially if you join the family picture).
