Hilary and Autism

by

I am just getting caught up on my news for last week and thought you might be as well. The most startling piece I found was on Hilary Clinton and her autism platform.

Clinton’s Autism Plan: Hilary Clinton promises more funds for autism…almost $700 million a year to help people affect by autism. She states that they money will be spent for research and provide support for families and teachers, as well as autistic children and adults.

As a Senator, she cosponsored the Combating Autism Act and introduced the Expanding the Promise for Individuals with Autism Act in order to “ensure that Americans living with autism could have access as quickly as possible to evidence based treatment, interventions, and services.”

But does that “evidence based treatment” mean she does not support biomedical? Obviously, Hilary believes the disease is a “national health crisis” which “costs the nation at least $35 billion a year”. If it “costs” so much then another $700 million is certainly not enough to throw into the pot.

The plan calls for the following steps:
If she’s elected, Clinton said she would also take other autism initiatives including:

*Expanding research to identify the causes of autism, including potential environmental reasons.

*Improving education and early detection and intervention, including creating a task force to investigate autism treatments and services.

*Training for teachers to instruct children with autism.

She also talked about health care and insurance for families with children with autism.

“Parents
will no longer be burdened by unmanageable premiums just because their children have autism,” Clinton said.

Kristina Chew at Autism Vox has created an excellent comparison of the Edwards, Obama, and Clinton platforms on autism. They seem to differentiate themselves between research and prevention based vs. the human side of things.

(All autism and disability legislation can be located and tracked via Thomas.gov, http://thomas.loc.gov/
using keywords, such as…”autism”)
