Return of the Friday Freebie!
Okay, so I have been a tad lazy lately about the Friday Freebie. Please forgive me! I have had a huge project at home that is not so free. But, here is a great Friday Freebie for this week.
Right now we are are working on letter recognition at home but because AJ has both auditory and visual processing disorders this is very difficult for him. He loves music and learns great this way but there are few alphabet songs that help him visually recognize a letter.
So, to help him visually recognize letters we are going to start working on the following things.
1. We are going to make an alphabet placemat for him to eat on every night. This can be done with puffy paint so that the letters are raised up (or with foam letters). After everything is try you can either use saran wrap to enclose the placemat or use a laminator.
2. We are going to make sandpaper letters for him to trace his fingers on. These will be taped on the kitchen wall at his eye level so that when he walks through the kitchen he can see the letters. He can also run his fingers along the letters tracing each letter the way it is supposed to be written.
3. We also have flash cards that he can use at the dinner table. This will not only keep him more involved at the table (instead of making silly noises) but will also make him recall information.
4. About a month ago I purchased several workbooks and laminated individual sheets so that he can use them more than one time. Each sheet has letters that he has to match to objects (as in chicken starts with “c”).
5. I have not purchased these because my mother has some from her teaching days but Do2Learn has a great workbook for upper and lower case letters.
6. For sensory children, The Sensesational Alphabet is a fabulous book because kids get to actually hear and feel the texture of a horse or a lizard. They get to smell an apple or peach. I would love for AJ to have a book like this!
