Schools Go Green?

by Marcie

The National Autism Association (NAA) announced November 1 that they are supporting and encouraging a nationwide initiative to encourage schools to implement the “Greening the School” program run by the Environmental Center for Pediatric Oncology.

The Deirdre Imus Environmental Center for Pediatric Oncology® at Hackensack University Medical Center, a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit corporation, represents one of the first hospital-based programs whose specific mission is to identify, control and ultimately prevent exposures to environmental factors that may cause adult, and especially pediatric cancer, as well as other health problems with our children.

The Environmental Protection Agency estimates that one in five people spend their days in schools…so why not start there and make them safe for everyone? Making them green is a cost effective way to create a safe school.

Greening the school means removing cleaning agents that contain hazardous ingredients, toxic chemicals, and materials such as woods and carpets with formaldehyde. By replacing those chemicals with “responsible ingredients“.

According to founder, Deirdre Imus, toxic exposures are preventable.
“Greening the Cleaning(R) products offer schools cost-effective alternatives to toxic products that are likely linked to learning disabilities, absenteeism, asthma and other chronic illnesses among school children.”

The NAA encourages parents (and so do I, as I have a son who reacts to these toxic products) to present this information to school districts. Parents and districts can purchase and find more information at the Deirdre Imus Environmental Website.

I’d love to see this happen in the school I work at because the whole place stinks. It literally smells like someone cleaned all the floors and toilets with the same dirty mop. It makes me sick!
