Sensory Crashing

by

Since Little Pickel started Chelating he has been crashing so much that he is making me want to Crash right out of the house. By crashing I mean grabbing hold of my arm with both of his and jumping into me, barreling into me at full speed, head butting me about 10 times in a row, grabbing both of my legs and “grinding” his entire body into mine (yes I know it sounds strange but its not dirty in any way.)

However, if I keep him busy and use my sensory integration knowledge to keep him active I can eliminate some of the crashing. What Little Pickel is craving is one of two things; Proprioceptive (deep pressure/heavy work.) or vestibular (movement). This is ALWAYS the case with Little Pickel, as he always craves movement. One of the BEST things I can do for him is take him swimming. However, because he also craves tactile (touch) I have been taking him to the Splash Park lately.

At the Splash Park he is able to get both water deep pressure and sand tactile input. They not only have sprinklers and water buckets but they also have a sand pit that he can run in and dig in. He is in absolute heaven and tires within two hours.

Some other great proprioceptive activities:

Ball Pits
Moon shoes
trampolines
jump rope
Bop Bags (Punching Bags)
Jump-o-lenes
weighted backpacks, blankets, or vests

Heavy Work Activities

Digging in sand
toy vacuum
shoveling
scooter
bike
climbing anything
crabwalk
