Shriver Joins Toys R Us Differently-Abled Kids

by

The First Lady of California has teamed up with Toys” R ” Us in their Debut of Differently-Abled Kids. Available online and in stores, the “Guide for Differently Abled Kids is a complimentary toy-selection guide for parents and friends of children with disabilities”.

“I am so thrilled to join Toys “R” Us in its efforts to bring joy and laughter to children of all abilities through the power of play,” said Maria Shriver, who, in addition to being the First Lady of California, is the mother of four children. “The toys featured throughout the Guide provide a wonderful way to inspire children with special needs, encouraging them to have fun while learning everyday skills.”

The site not only includes toys recommendations but also National Lekotek Center’s “Top Ten Tips for Buying Toys”. Consumers can also download the guide so they can view it without being on the internet…a huge plus for those of us with internet issues. Additionally, there will be 3 million copies available in stores throughout the country.

Toys “R” Us will also be partnering up with special needs organizations like Autism Speaks, Children and Adults with Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, Muscular Dystrophy Association, National Association of Special Education Teachers (NASET) and National Down Syndrome Society (NDSS).

Currently, Toy “R” Us is the world’s leading specialty toy retailer. This will obviously catapult them into the special needs arena as well.

However, in order to seriously enter the special needs toy world they need to look at specialty toys and products. Tinker Toys and Dora are not going to cut it.

I looked at the toys they are showcasing as “Special Needs”…its the same stuff they have on their regular site and even some of the toys don’t fit their categories. ie: fine motor…a Little People School Bus? Lets see some lacing beads and cards, pegs and pegboards, gears building sets, squeeze balls.

In fact, just head to Therapy Shoppe for those things.
