Who, What, When, Where, Why and How
Questions are daunting for AJ but not for other kids his age. Questions should be simple, easy to answer, part of the developmental process.
For children with Autism answering questions is an intimidating and challenging concept. Luckily, NLConcepts has designed a product called the “Question Companion” to help.
“We created this new bundle after extensive testing. It’s commended by teachers, SLP’s and parents of autism-spectrum children,” comments NLC Co-Founder Jene Aviram. “We understand parental concerns. While gaining skills and progress every day, the abilities of autism-spectrum kids to comprehend and answer questions often lag behind; leaving a gap that sets children back in comprehension and communication.”
The question cards help children understand and answer who, what, when, where, why and how. According to Natural Learning Concepts, question cards are unique because:
*photographs on each card
*naturally answered question and answer sequences on the back of each card
*each question answer sequences is told like a story, playing up to the child’s natural story telling abilities
*stress free way to comprehend questions
This is something that AJ really struggles with, especially the why. Although that is the last developmental question to be learned, it is the hardest one for him to digest. By four years old a child should be able to answer who, how, and how many questions and by five should be able to answer when and why questions. At this point we are still working on yes and no, with prompting.
Here is a great developmental list.
