World Autism Day and Month-long Activities
Autism Speaks, in conjunction with the United Nations General Assembly, created the first annual World Autism Awareness Day. The day, April 2, is supposed to be utilized to educate, make people aware, and celebrate autism.
People from around the world are said to be taking part in the day, raising awareness for families affected with autism. Autism Speaks and Toys R Us have teamed up for first ever Walk Now for Autism; Virtual Walk 2008. It will allow anyone with Internet access to build a “walking community” and raise money for autism.
Barnes & Noble will host storytime events across the nation. You can read the book Since We’re Friends, an Autism Storybook online through the month of April.
World Autism Day will conclude with the Ringling Brothers and Barnum Bailey Circus at Madison Square Garden in New York City. I know that we went to see the circus this year and it was hard on AJ so I do hope that they tame it down a tad…Autism Speaks states that it will be “autism friendly” and they will have a quiet room for children with auditory sensitivities.
