Yeast and its Ugly Behaviors
AJ spent the entire day today trying to lick my shirt sleeve, trying to scratch my arms, face, and all of the couches. His eyes were glazed over the entire day, he was laughing uncontrollably and not listening, clearing his throat simply because he knew it made upset, hitting me and everyone else, kicking me, throwing things at me and the dog, screaming at me, and testing me to the limits. I just wanted to send him to time out.

AJ has been on Nystatin, an anti-fungal medication since May and it has not been working. I am not sure if it is because of his diet and our inclusion of fruits and the occasional sugar or if it is because of the antibiotics he used in September for an infection in his hand or for the very strong antibiotics we are using now for the bronchitis he has now.
In the autism community it is pretty common knowledge that yeast yeast flourished in the gut. Since AJ’s intestinal balance was disrupted by the antibiotics what he has left of healthy bacteria was killed and the yeast will flourish and release toxic chemicals into the bloodstream.
Unfortunately, it is not only antibiotics that can affect yeast. Anything that weakens the immune system can contribute to yeast.
One of the major toxins produced by yeast is acetic aldehyde, through conversion by the enzyme aldehyde dehydrogenase. Its multiple effects can be devastating. It is converted by the liver into alcohol, depleting the body of magnesium and potassium, reducing cell energy, and causing symptoms of intoxication, disorientation, dizziness, or mental confusion.
Dietary treatments for yeast include reducing all sugars including cane sugar, fructose, honey, molasses, fruits, maple syrup, high fructose corn syrup. The only sugars AJ eats are from fruit and some maple sugar. He does get the occasional treat of a Popsicle or cookie but we will be modifying those soon.
Biomedical and medical treatments include probiotics, therbiotics (like oregano, garlic, and grapefruit seed oils), and prescription medications. These include Nystatin, and Dyflucan. I stated before that AJ was taking Nystatin but when he was prescribed this particular medication from Pfeiffer they stated that it was not the correct anti-fungal for his type of yeast but that it was better for his liver (obviously I will be calling them tomorrow).
